Where do I start with this topic? Well I was up late night (shocking I know) and there was nothing on tv. Amidst all the infomercials and Girls Gone Wild commercials, I saw that MTV had a mini marathon of the Jersey Shore. Man oh man! I cannot believe that people watch this show. Hell I can’t believe that I kept the tv on and watched it myself. But I couldn’t turn away from the train wreck that is this show! The cast of characters made me laugh all the time. Not because they said anything funny but how MTV depicts Italians. The premise of the show is that they take 8 Italians (none of which are from Jersey) and stick them in a house. It is very Real World-esque!
As I am watching this show that is filled with fights, cursing, gold, and excessive amounts of hairspray, I couldn’t help but wonder the appeal of this show. Then I realized that this was an attempt at bringing The Sopranos or Growing Up Gotti to MTV. I must say that this show perpetuates every Italian stereotype known to man. Apparently MTV got in trouble with the National Italian American Foundation for displaying the “guido” stereotype. Hell I am not even Italian and I can’t help but feel offended. But people enjoy glorifying stereotypes. MTV just happened to go overboard with the Jersey Shore.
If you enjoy watching every Italian stereotype imaginable, then the Jersey Shore is for you. I wish that I could’ve slept that night instead of watching a few episodes. Like most people, everybody loves a train wreck! MTV better not try this ish with Black folks!

If you are a fan of Jersey Shore please explain why? Leave a comment explaining yourself!

im gonna have to disagree with some of your points. MTV isn’t creating the stereotype, perpetuating it a bit, yes. the crazy thing is, there IS a segment of the population (ie the jersey shore) that lives like this. commonly known as guidos.
we’ve all seen em, they’re jacked like Barry Bonds on a good day, Armani Exchange shirts, Ed Hardy jeans, tribal tattoos, etc.
as a former Massachusetts resident, you probably got your taste of this with the patrons of the North Shore. you probably just blocked it out of your memory, well, guess what! theyyyyyyyreeeeeeeee back. gold chains muthafuckkkaaaa!
i am not going to disagree that there is a segment of the Italian community that act like this. but c’mon i think MTV has gone overboard with the stereotype!
the closest i got to Jersey Shore is with Cous and Company. But that is on a smaller scale. Cous is jacked out of his mind but he traded Armani Exachange for an Anthony Mason jersey. Cous has chinos instead of Ed Hardy jeans. The gold starter kit and the Japanese tattoos!
Whats going to stop MTV from doing Chinatown or MLK Drive?
